After helping Rice to a series win in a first-place showdown at cross-town rival Houston, Owls sophomore RF Chad Mozingo has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week. The Pitcher of the Week went to Tulane senior RHP Jonathan Garrett, whose career-best performance on the mound led the Green Wave to a Friday night win at rival Southern Miss.
Mozingo returned to the starting lineup for the first time since April 17 and promptly set the tone for the Owls winning three-of-four games last week as they held on to sole possession of first place in the C-USA league standings. Mozingo, who had only pinch-hitting duty since getting sidelined with an injury, hit safely in each outing and finished 7-for-15 (.467) with three doubles for a .667 slugging percentage. He also drove-in seven runs, scored five times and stole one base. The Spring, Tex., native patiently drew three walks for a .556 on-base percentage. He had the game-winning hit against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and scored the game-winning run Saturday night at UH.
Garrett threw a pitching gem in the Friday night’s 9-2 Conference USA opener at Southern Miss. The Mandeville, La. native shattered his previous career-high strikeout record of six, fanning 13 Golden Eagles in a complete-game effort. He gave up just five hits and issued just one base on balls to improve to 5-1 on the season.
This marks the first time that either Mozingo or Garrett have been honored as C-USA Players of the Week.
