The fact that Corky Palmer will no longer be the head coach of the Southern Miss baseball team is beginning to settle in as he was honored with a framed No. 44 jersey prior to Saturday’s game against rival Tulane.
As Golden Eagle fans look to a future without Palmer, USM athletic director Richard Giannini is in the early stages of finding his replacement. Speculation centers around associate head coach Scott Berry, who is in his ninth season on the staff and his sixth as the top assistant.
Palmer announced his decision to retire at the end of the season on Thursday, and Giannini said Saturday that he prefers not to drag the process out in naming his successor. He was safe not to commit to a timetable, but there’s a real possibility that a coach could be named as early as this week.
