Story from Saint Xavier University Athletics:

CHICAGO – Following a 1-0 complete game victory Wednesday afternoon against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), Saint Xavier University junior lefthander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) continued to shrink what is already collegiate baseball’s lowest earned run average (ERA). Koehn currently posts an unbelievable 0.30 ERA (two earned runs) over 60.0 innings and nine starts and has been rewarded with a perfect 9-0 win-loss record with seven complete games and five shutout victories. Currently, he owns the lowest earned run average of any pitcher at any four-year college in any of the four divisions of college baseball, including all three NCAA divisions. Through April 26, the NCAA’s individual leader for ERA was Gabriel Duran, a sophomore pitcher at NCAA Division II Dowling College (N.Y.). Duran has a 0.59 ERA having pitched 61.0 innings over nine appearances with four earned runs.

“What Jayson has been able to do so far this season is nothing short of amazing,” said SXU baseball coach Mike Dooley. “He is not the type of pitcher who will dominate opposing batters with his fastball, but he possesses unbelievable command of his pitches and just makes it difficult for batters to hit the ball consistently. He is having a special year and I hope it carries over into postseason play.”

Koehn’s impressive season is not limited to his stellar ERA. He currently leads the NAIA in a number of other pitching categories, including opponent batting average (.143), hits allowed per game (4.41) and runs allowed per game (0.25). Koehn has also set or tied some impressive school records this season. He now owns the SXU mark for consecutive scoreless innings pitched (35) and also tied the program’s consecutive wins record (9). Saint Xavier’s single season individual earned run average record is held by Bill Pickert, who recorded a 1.14 ERA during the 1975 season.
