Ø The Big 12 has defeated at least one ranked non-conference opponent over the last eight weeks. The league is 160-66-1 (.707) against other conferences in 2009.
Ø Six Big 12 teams are ranked nationally, including Texas (2), Baylor (9), Oklahoma (13), Texas A&M (16), Kansas State (23) and Oklahoma State (25).
Ø Greg Folgia (Missouri) earned the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week award while Austin Wood (Texas) was named the Pitcher of the Week for games of April 13-19. It is the third honor of Wood’s career — one in each of the last three seasons — and Folgia’s first.
Folgia hit .429 in Missouri’s five games, including a .455 average in the Kansas State series. His performance was highlighted by a two home run-game in Saturday’s 11-6 victory over KSU. The North Wales, Pa. native drove in five runs with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a three-run shot in the eighth. Folgia led the Big 12 in total bases (18) and was tied for the most RBI (10) and doubles (3) in the league last week.
Wood made four scoreless appearances, which tied for the most outings on the week by a Big 12 pitcher. He allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out nine over 6.0 innings of work. The Kingwood, Texas lefty, who recorded a league-leading three saves, capped off the weekend striking out the last batter he faced in Sunday’s 8-5 triumph over OU. It also marked Wood’s 100th career contest, joining only three others at Texas to reach the century mark in games pitched.
Ø Four Big 12 student-athletes were named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List, including Paul Smyth (Kansas), Thomas Rooke (Kansas State), Austin Wood (Texas) and Travis Starling (Texas A&M). UT’s J. Brent Cox won the inaugural Stopper of the Year in 2005 while Don Czyz of KU claimed the honor in ‘06.
Ø Nick Faunce (Kansas) and Brian Cloud (Texas Tech) are finalists for the 2009 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The accolade honors student-athletes who have committed four years of excellence both on and off the playing field.
