CHARLOTTE, N.C. – High Point senior shortstop Alfie Wheeler (Manteo, N.C.) and Gardner-Webb senior Devin Campbell (Greenville, S.C.) have been named the Choice Hotels Player of the Week and New Balance Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played April 13-19, it was announced today by the League office.
Wheeler helped spark an offense that scored 46 runs in five games this week as High Point went 3-2 playing four games against ranked opponents. In the Panthers’ win over No. 4 North Carolina, Wheeler set the table all game long, going 4-for-5, scoring three times and driving in one. It was the highest ranked team High Point has ever defeated. He then picked up three hits, scored three runs and drove in three runs against Virginia Tech. In the weekend series with No. 14 Coastal Carolina, Wheeler had three more hits, scored three times and had three runs batted in. His double in the second game gave High Point its first lead of the series as the Panthers defeated the Chanticleers, 12-8. In the series finale, he singled in the first two runs of the game to lead High Point to the 7-2 win. He also drew two walks in the opener. For the week, Wheeler went 10-for-21 at the plate ( = .476), scored nine runs, had seven RBI, walked three times, and posted a .560 on-base percentage and .619 slugging percentage.
Campbell was magnificent in Gardner-Webb’s series opening win over UNC Asheville Friday, hurling 8.0 innings, scattering six singles (two infield) and striking out nine in a 12-2 win. He held the Bulldogs to a .200 batting average (6-of-30), and retired 14-of-16 batters after two unearned runs crossed in the top of the first — with the only two batters to reach doing so on infield hits. Campbell walked a season-low one batter in the game as well. His line last week: 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO.
