UTSA 7 Lamar 6

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Brett Aguilar’s two-out double to right center brought home senior All-American Michael Rockett with the game-winning run in the 10th inning and UTSA won the rubber game of this weekend’s three-game Southland Conference series with Lamar, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

After the Cardinals scored a pair of runs in the ninth to send the contest to extra frames, Brian Needham recorded two quick outs to start the bottom of the 10th, but Rockett singled up the middle to begin the game-winning rally. Aguilar then lined the first pitch he saw to the gap in right center to give the Birds (21-18, 11-10 SLC) their third win of the week and third walk-off triumph of the season.

That made a winner of junior Zach Calhoon (4-3), who allowed two runs on a pair of hits and two walks in his two innings of work.

Meanwhile, Needham (2-3) was involved in the decision for the second day in a row, this time on the losing end. Saturday’s game one victor surrendered the game-winning run on three hits and struck out a pair in his two innings of work.

THIBODAUX, LA – For the third game in a row, a Sam Houston State pitcher hurled a complete game as Brent Powers limited Nicholls State to six hits in nine innings as the Bearkats handed the Colonels a 9-2 defeat Sunday at Didier Field.

The victory extended Sam Houston’s winning streak to seven games, gave the Kats a three-game sweep in the Southland Conference series with Nicholls and upped the Bearkats’ record to 25-13 for the season and 14-7 in SLC action.

Center fielder Justin Keithley went 3-for-5 with four RBIs as Sam Houston totaled 14 hits. Second baseman Braeden Riley also went 3-for-5 with one run batted in. Nick Zaleski hit a solo home run.

For the series at Nicholls, Sam Houston hit .348 as a team. Riley was 9-for-15 for the weekend. The Bearkats produced eight doubles, a triple and a home run in the three contests.

HAMMOND – The Lions found themselves trailing the Islanders early on, but a pair of runs in the third and five more in the fourth gave the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (23-15, 12-9 SLC) a lead it would not relinquish as the Lions claimed a 12-6 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (14-26, 6-15 SLC) to take the rubber match of a three game set on Sunday.

The six-run win gave the Lions their 15th come-from-behind victory of the season and gave Southeastern its fifth conference series win in seven tries.

Southeastern struck first as sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis led off the bottom of the first with a homer to right center to make it 1-0 after one.

That lead would be short lived as the Islanders plated two runs in the top of the second to claim a 2-1 lead.

However, the Lions didn’t wait long to mount their rally, as junior third baseman Chris Ernest and senior designated hitter Jordan D’Arensbourg led off the bottom of the second with consecutive doubles. D’Arensbourg’s two-bagger brought home Ernest to knot the score at 2-2 after two.
