RHP Kendal Volz allowed two earned runs in a career-long 8.1-inning outing.

This is the Big 12 recap from Friday.

#13 Baylor 8 at #28 Oklahoma State 5

WACO, Texas — Aaron Miller blasted a two-out, two-run homer well over the wall in right-center in the top of the first inning, and Kendal Volz never relinquished that lead as seventh-ranked Baylor defeated Oklahoma State 8-5 in Friday night’s Big 12 Conference series opener at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Baylor (25-11, 10-6) earned its first victory in a series opener at Stillwater since 2003. Oklahoma State (24-15, 4-9) has lost five straight Big 12 games.

Volz (3-3) allowed five runs – only two of which were earned – on nine hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 8.1 innings, a career-long outing. It was his first Big 12 victory on the road since April 15, 2007, at Kansas. Miller’s first-inning home run sent Volz to the mound in the bottom of the first with a lead for the first time since the Bears scored two runs in the top of the first against Oklahoma in the final pool-play game at the 2007 Big 12 Championship.

Landis Ware pushed the Bears’ lead to 3-0 with a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth. Oklahoma State got a run back in the bottom of the inning on Neil Medchill’s one-out solo homer. Baylor answered in the sixth as Kenton Gedwed delivered a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit single. It was Gedwed’s sixth hit in 10 pinch-hit appearances this season.

#23 Texas A&M 8 Nebraska 2

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Brooks Raley gave up just two hits in 7 1/3 innings of work and Caleb Shofner matched a career high with four RBIs to lift No. 23 Texas A&M to an 8-2 win over Nebraska Friday evening before 3,593 fans at Olsen Field.

After giving up a run and hit in the first, Raley would allow just two Nebraska baserunners past first the rest of the night. The only other knock the Huskers managed off Raley–who pitched into the eighth inning–came with two outs in the third.

Shofner and Luke Anders had three hits apiece to lead A&M (23-14, 9-7 Big 12), while Nebraska (17-19-1, 4-12) was held to four hits on the evening.

Both teams would push across first-inning runs. Tyler Farst gave the Huskers the early lead with a two-out double to center that scored Jake Mort, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.

A&M tied the game on a Kyle Colligan sacrifice fly that brought home Raley, who walked and moved to third on an Anders single.

The score remained the same until the fifth, when the Aggies batted around off four Husker pitchers, scoring three times to take a 4-1 lead.

Missouri 4 #29 Kansas State 3

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Trailing 2-0 in the top of the ninth inning, Missouri scored four runs on back-to-back home runs and defeated No. 21 Kansas State, 4-3, and give MU Head Coach Tim Jamieson his 500th career victory.

Junior Aaron Senne led of the ninth inning with a double and junior Greg Folgia reached on an infield single. Junior Trevor Coleman then hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year over the wall in left field to give MU a 3-2 win. Senior Kyle Mach followed by hitting his second home run of the season to give MU a two-run lead.

Kansas State attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, getting four-straight singles and scoring one run, but junior Kyle Gibson was able to close out the win and pick up his fifth complete game of the season.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am,” Head Coach Tim Jamieson said. “It was tough going there for most of the game against one of the best pitchers in the conference, but we battled and hung in there. We got some great at-bats and Kyle had just enough there at the end.”

Texas Tech 15 #30 Kansas 10

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech pounded out a season-high 21 hits and senior second baseman Willie Rueda returned from a hamstring injury by going 4-for-6 with four RBIs as the Red Raiders handed No. 24 Kansas a 15-10 loss on Friday night in this Big 12 series opener at Dan Law Field.

The win brings the Red Raiders back to even in Big 12 play as they now stand at 8-8 in league play and 17-23 overall. The loss snaps a six-game win streak by the Jayhawks as they fall to 24-13 overall and to 7-6 in the Big 12.

The Jayhawks came storming out of the gates with two outs in the top of the first inning as they plated four runs to take a commanding early lead. After retiring the leadoff hitter on a groundout, Tech starter Brian Cloud walked the next two batters and then surrendered four consecutive hits, including two doubles. Jayhawk left fielder Casey Lytle drove in two of the runs with a single through the right side.

Texas Tech came firing back in its half of the first as the Red Raiders cut the Jayhawk lead to one run (4-3). After a leadoff single by Rueda, junior shortstop Joey Kenworthy put the Red Raiders on the board with a two-run home run to left. The home run was just his second of the season and both have come in Big 12 play. Senior first baseman Chris Richburg gave Tech its third run of the game when he followed Kenworthy’s lead and blasted a solo home run, his tenth, over the fence in left-center field.
