Here is your ACC Recap for April 17th.
#4 North Carolina 3 #9 Miami (FL) 0
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – All-America right-hander Alex White fired North Carolina’s first one-hitter since 1994 to lead the No. 4 Tar Heels past No. 7 Miami, 3-0, Friday at Boshamer Stadium. White faced only 28 batters – just one over the minimum – and struck out 10 to claim his first career complete-game shutout.
White, who improved to 6-1 with the victory, outdueled Miami lefty Chris Hernandez (4-3) in a meeting of the last year’s ACC Pitcher of the Year and ACC Freshman of the Year. He allowed just one hit, a third-inning Dave DiNatale single, and issued only one walk in the eighth. In between, White set down 14 straight batters.
After working 8 1/3 in a tough-luck loss at Florida State last week, White would not be denied his second career complete game, as he struck out the side in the ninth to record his fifth career double-digit strikeout effort. Over his last four starts, all against top-20 opponents, White owns a 1.93 ERA, 36 strikeouts and has allowed only 17 hits in 32 2/3 innings. He has pitched at least seven innings in five straight starts and has six straight outings with at least eight strikeouts.
#11 Georgia Tech 13 Wake Forest 2
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Deck McGuire held the Demon Deacons to two runs and Tony Plagman led the Yellow Jacket offense with five hits – all for extra bases – as No. 11 Georgia Tech (24-8-1, 10-5-1 ACC) handed Wake Forest (20-17, 6-13 ACC) a 13-2 loss Friday night at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
“When you win on Fridays in the ACC, it gives you a chance to do well the next two days, so this (win) is a big lift for our team,” head coach Danny Hall said.
McGuire (6-0) earned his sixth win of the season by limiting Wake Forest to just four hits and two walks in his seven innings of work. He also struck out nine to raise his 2009 total to 75 K’s this season.

Virginia Tech 5 #18 Clemson 2
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech pitching staff once again delivered a solid effort for the fifth consecutive ACC game, limiting visiting Clemson to just six hits in a 5-2 upset of the 18th-ranked Tigers on Friday night at English Field.
The win, which improved the Hokies to 23-12 overall and 8-10 in league play, was the seventh straight for Virginia Tech, as well as the fifth consecutive ACC win. With 23 victories, the Hokies have already matched their highest win total since 2004, when they went 29-27. Tech also won 23 games in 2005, 2007 and 2008. The eight conference wins marks Tech’s highest total in league play since joining the ACC prior to the 2005 campaign.
Starting pitcher Rhett Ballard led the charge for the Hokies, tossing seven innings for the second consecutive outing to improve his record to 5-2. He allowed two runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out seven – his highest total since Feb. 27. Sophomore Sean McDermott took care of the rest, pitching one-hit ball over the final two frames to pick up his first-career save.

Maryland 4 Duke 1
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland pitcher Scott Swinson pitched 8 2/3 dominant innings, allowing only one hit out of the infield to the Blue Devils as the University of Maryland baseball team won the series opener, 4-1, against its Atlantic Coast Conference rival Friday evening at Shipley Field.
Swinson pitched a shutout through the first eight innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the ninth, despite allowing only one ball to leave the infield.
With the Terps (17-20, 5-14 ACC) leading 4-0, Duke (26-14, 9-10 ACC) put runners on the corners with one out via a hit batsman, ground-out and infield single. Left fielder Jeremy Gould then scratched across Duke’s only run of the game with an RBI ground-out to second. After an Alex Hassan single to right field, Swinson was relieved by closer Dan Gentzler.
