SAN MARCOS – The Texas State baseball team shut out their second opponent this season when Garret Carruth and company combined for a 4-0 victory over Houston Baptist Monday night at Bobcat Field.

Texas State has now won five-straight games and is 24-10 on the season. HBU drops to 6-25 overall.

After four scoreless innings, the Bobcats broke open the tight game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tristan Gaines walked Jason Martinson and Laurn Randell and Cody Gambill followed the pair with an RBI single up the middle. Paul Goldschmidt backed the hit with a base hit to left field to push Randell across for the 2-0 score.

HBU put the tying run on base in the top of the sixth and seventh inning, but the Texas State defense held off the threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, Texas State struck again with back-to-back hits from Goldschmidt and Keith Prestridge, before Spenser Dennis notched that sacrifice fly for a three-run lead.

The Bobcats final run came in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of Husky throwing errors to close out the 4-0 victory.

Carruth struck out three batters and allowed three hits in his six-inning stay on the mound.

Tyler Brundridge pitched two innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts and Michael Russo closed out the game with a single strikeout in the ninth.

Goldschmidt led the team with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate with an RBI.

Texas State out-hit HBU 7-4.

The Bobcats return to the field Wednesday night to host Prairie View A&M.
