CBB Visit: Beanpot Consolation Game

The College Baseball Blog made the trip to Fenway Park to take in the Consolation game of the Beanpot Tournament. The Consolation game featured Boston College taking on Harvard.

In the Consolation game, Boston College sent freshman Mike Dennhardt to the mound while Harvard started Zachary Hofeld to the mound. After a scoreless first inning, Boston College would get on the board in the bottom of the second with a leadoff walk to Mike Belfiore who would score on a Garrett Smith groundout for the early 1-0 Eagles lead. They would strike again the in the bottom of the third inning with two outs as Tony Sanchez got a single up through the right side. He would come around to score on a double off the right field wall by Mickey Wiswall to give Boston College the 2-0 lead.

Harvard would get on the board in the fourth inning when Dillion O’Neal would get a leadoff walk. He was followed by a single from Taylor Meehan who hit a ball off of BC’s shortstop Garrett Smith’s glove to put runners on first and second. Harvard would then proceed to pull off a successful double steal to put runners on second and third. Both of them would come around and score when Matt Rogers hit a triple off of the Green Monster to tie up the game at 2. He would stay at third base when Tom Stack-Babich grounded out to Mickey Wiswall for the first out of the inning. Harry Douglas would follow with a walk to put runners on the corners with one out in the inning. Douglas would take off for second base to force a throw down to second when the throw was made Rogers took off for home plate where he was able to beat the throw to the plate and give the Crimson the 3-2 lead.

Boston College would respond in the bottom of the fourth inning with a one out single by Harry Darling. He would move over to third base on a Brad Zapensas single to put runners on the corner. He would then score on a sacrifice fly to left field by Robbie Anston to tie the score at 3.

Boston College did most of their damage in the 5th and 6th innings as the Harvard coaching staff made the move to the bullpen. BC picked up three runs in the 5th inning with the big hit being a two run double by Mike Belfiore. Boston College also picked up three runs in the 6th inning with the biggest hit coming from Robbie Anston who hit a leadoff triple before scoring on a wild pitch.

Harvard would score a single run in the sixth inning and the ninth inning to set up the final scoreline of 9-5. Boston College starting pitcher Mike Dennhardt picked up the win to put his record at 3-0 while Harvard starter Zachary Hofeld got the loss to drop him to 1-0 on the year.
