Tempe, AZ – Carlos Ramirez and Kole Calhoun each had four RBI and Mike Leake threw a complete game as the No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team defeated Washington State 13-3 on Friday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. A crowd of 3,146 saw the Sun Devils improve to 24-7, 9-1 in the Pac-10, on the season with the win.
Ramirez went 4-for-5 at the plate with an RBI single in the sixth and his team-leading 12th home run, a three-run shot over the left field fence, in the eighth. It was Ramirez’s first career four-hit game. Calhoun had a three-run homer in the first inning to get ASU on the board, and he added an RBI double in the seventh.
Leake allowed eight hits and three earned runs with 12 strikeouts and one walk to earn the win and improve to 8-1 on the year. It was Leake’s second complete game of the season and sixth of his ASU career.
The Sun Devils wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, as Calhoun and Riccio Torrez hit back-to-back home runs in the first to give ASU a 4-0 lead. The Cougars answered with three runs of their own in the second, but that would prove to be all the runs they would get off Leake all night.
Jason Kipnis and Ramirez each had RBI singles in the fifth, and then Calhoun and Riccio Torrez again drove in runs in consecutive at-bats in the seventh on a double by Calhoun and a single by Torrez.
The Sun Devils would add five more runs in the eighth, as Kipnis drove in one with a fielder’s choice groundout, Ramirez hit a three-run homer and Jared McDonald capped off the scoring with a pinch-hit solo shot to center.
