COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Air Force junior Matt Alexander and TCU junior righthander Paul Gerrish have been named the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Alexander, an Oak Park, Calif., native, hit .632 (12-for-19) from the plate, with six home runs, one triple, one double, 17 RBI and 11 runs scored in the Falcons’ 2-2 series split vs. Utah Valley. He also tallied a 1.737 slugging percentage and touched 33 total bases. In game one of Friday’s doubleheader vs. the Wolverines, Alexander went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in a 13-7 loss. In game two, he went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, a triple, five RBI and two runs scored in a 12-10 loss. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Alexander went 4-for-6, with three home runs, six RBI and four runs scored in Air Force’s 22-21 win. His three homers tied for the second-most in a single game in MWC history and marked the first time since the 2002 season that an Air Force player hit three round-trippers in a single contest. Alexander concluded his weekend with another 4-for-6 outing in the Falcons’ 18-14 win in the nightcap, smacking two more home runs and tallying five RBI and four runs scored. Alexander’s performance earned him Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week recognition for the week of April 6.
Gerrish, from Filer, Idaho, pitched a career-high 7.2 innings to collect the win in No. 22 TCU’s 4-2 victory over 18th-ranked New Mexico last Friday. He struck out four batters and walked one, while allowing just six hits and two earned runs. New Mexico, the nation’s top-rated offense, came into the contest hitting .405 and averaging 11.6 runs per game, but hit just .240 (6-for-25) and scored two runs against Gerrish.
