PHILADELPHIA (3/31/09) – Temple senior Carmen Del Mastro (Philadelphia, PA / Roman Catholic) and Villanova junior Brian Streilein (Staten Island, NY / Brick Memorial) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the head coaches and sports information offices.
Del Mastro, also the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, batted. 650 (13-for-20) in leading the Owls to a 4-1 week, including a sweep of La Salle. He had at least two hits in all five games, scored eight runs and drove in four. The senior is batting .444 with 12 steals.
Streilein took a shutout into the ninth inning against West Virginia and ended up allowing one earned run in 8.1 innings in the Big East win. He struck out three against the Mountaineers, which entered the game with the fourth-best offense in the nation, averaging better than 10 runs per game.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Monday during the season. The fourth annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
