All the SEC teams were in action on Sunday, and Arkansas and Mississippi State played a doubleheader due to weather conditions on Friday and Saturday in Fayetteville. Here is the full SEC recap.
#1 Georgia 4, Tennessee 3
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—–Top-ranked Georgia used a four run fifth highlighted by a two-run home run by Joey Lewis to complete a sweep of Tennessee with a 4-3 victory Sunday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 24-3 overall and won their seventh straight SEC game to move to 7-2 in league action. The win was the 2,000th in program history.
Tennessee (11-15, 1-8 SEC) loaded the bases with one out in the ninth trailing 4-3, but Dean Weaver struck out Cody Brown and Josh Liles to end the game and pick up his fourth save.
#7 LSU 2, #14 Ole Miss 1
BATON ROUGE — LSU starter Austin Ross threw a career-high eight innings and allowed only two hits, while left fielder Jared Mitchell hit the game-winning single in the eighth as second-ranked LSU defeated No.11 Ole Miss 2-1, to capture its seventh straight SEC series Sunday in Alex Box Stadium.
With the win, the Tigers (21-6, 6-3) gain sole possession of second place in the SEC West behind division-leading Arkansas. The Rebels (16-8, 5-4) move to third place in the West.
Ross (4-2) had a brilliant performance, allowing one run on two hits, while walking one and striking out five in eight innings of work.
#16 Arkansas 5, Mississippi State 1
FAYETTEVILLE – The No. 9 Arkansas Razorback baseball team split their Southeastern Conference Sunday afternoon doubleheader with Mississippi State at Baum Stadium winning the first game 5-1, then dropping the second 12-4.
Arkansas (19-5, 8-1 SEC) had its program best eight-game winning streak to start the SEC season snapped with the game two loss while Mississippi State (15-12, 3-6 SEC) ended a six-game SEC losing streak with its win at Baum Stadium.
Mississippi State 12, #16 Arkansas 4
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State freshman left-hander Nick Routt cooled off the Southeastern Conference’s hottest baseball team Sunday afternoon.
Routt threw his second straight complete game as the Bulldogs beat the Arkansas Razorbacks 12-4 in the final game of a weekend three-game series played at UA’s Baum Stadium.
MSU snapped a six-game losing streak in league play by salvaging the final game of Sunday’s doubleheader and the weekend series. The Bulldogs are now 15-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play, good for a two-way tie with Alabama for fifth place in the Western Division. Ninth-ranked Arkansas fell to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in league play.
#23 Florida 10, #27 Alabama 7
All nine starters had at least one hit and six players turned in multiple-hit efforts as No. 23 Florida (18-8/6-3 SEC) completed a weekend sweep of Alabama (16-10/3-6 SEC) with a 10-7 victory on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,803 fans at McKethan Stadium. It was the Gators’ first sweep of the Crimson Tide since April 1-3, 1994, and UF has now taken its last six league outings and notched consecutive sweeps for the first time since knocking off Auburn and Georgia during the 2007 campaign.
South Carolina 4, Kentucky 3
Lexington, Ky. – South Carolina broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning on its way to a 4-2 victory over Kentucky on a brisk, cold Sunday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Whit Merrifield tallied a RBI double and Nick Ebert knocked a two-run single in the three-run seventh as Carolina won its first SEC series of the season. The offense backed a solid outing by Gamecock right-hander Blake Cooper, who hurled his second career complete game to earn the victory. The Gamecocks are now 18-7 and 4-5 in the SEC while the loss drops Kentucky to 16-9 and 4-5 in league play. South Carolina returns to action on Tuesday evening at The Citadel with first pitch at Joe Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. set for 7 p.m.
Auburn 11, Vanderbilt 10
AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn connected for five home runs, accounting for eight of the team’s 11 runs, as Auburn claimed its second SEC series victory of the season with an 11-10 win over Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park. Hunter Morris finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and one of Auburn’s homers, driving in two runs and scoring two more.
The win improved Auburn’s record to 18-9, 4-5 SEC while Vanderbilt dropped to 17-10, 3-6 SEC.
