CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Jason Garofalo’s grand slam highlighted a seven-run sixth inning, and No. 3 Georgia Tech (17-3, 7-1 ACC) hit five home runs to down No. 2 Miami (19-6, 7-3 ACC), 13-9, in the series opener Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The win snapped a streak of six-straight losses to the Hurricanes and was just the eighth for the Yellow Jackets in Coral Gables.
Luke Murton hit his first and second home runs of the season, while Derek Dietrich and Jeff Rowland also homered against the Hurricanes. Twelve of the Yellow Jackets’ 13 runs came off home runs.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Mike Cavasinni’s two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to the be the difference for No. 5 North Carolina in a 4-3 series-opening win over No. 8 Virginia Friday at Boshamer Stadium. Brian Moran struck out the only two batters he faced in the eighth to earn his second win, and Colin Bates dodged two singles in the ninth to nail down his fourth save for the Tar Heels (19-5, 6-3 ACC).
Due to the threat of rain later in the day Saturday, UNC and UVA will play game two of the series at 1 p.m.
All-America right-hander Alex White went a season-best 7 1/3 innings and matched a season-high with nine strikeouts. He scattered seven hits and three walks before giving way in the eighth to Moran (2-1), who fanned two to strand a runner in scoring position. Bates induced a key double play ball in the ninth and got pinch hitter Scott Silverstein to ground out to end the game.
Boston College 13 #20 Clemson 1
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior Mike Belfiore led a barrage of Boston College home runs with two while driving in seven runs and senior JB MacDonald was nearly unhittable on the mound as the baseball team overwhelmed No. 20 Clemson, 13-1, Friday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Shea Field.
Belfiore smashed a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning to dead center and added a three-run shot in the second for BC. Junior Tony Sanchez went 2-for-3 in the game with a homer, four RBI and three runs. Junior John Spatola added the other home run for the Eagles with a pinch hit solo shot in the eighth.
Junior Barry Butera picked up three hits in the game and classmate Robbie Anston went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs.

#22 Florida State 5 Maryland 2 (Susp. 6th inning)
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Friday night’s baseball game between Maryland and Florida State has been suspended due to rain with Florida State holding a 5-2 lead in the middle of the sixth inning.
The game is tentatively scheduled to resume Saturday at 11 a.m., with Saturday’s regularly-scheduled game to start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.
The Seminoles scored two runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The Terps fought back with two in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by David Poutier and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Bennett.
Maryland will be hitting to start Saturday’s suspended game, with Poutier, Mike Murphy and A.J. Casario due up in the bottom of the sixth.
