IRVING, Texas—J.T. Wise (Oklahoma) and Kyle Gibson (Missouri) have been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the games of March 16-22, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. Gibson earns the award for the second straight week, while Wise is being honored for the first time.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
J.T. Wise, Oklahoma, C, Sr., 6-1, 207, Apoka, Fla./LSU
Wise extended his hitting streak to 10 games after finishing with eight hits in 15 plate appearances, compiling a .533 batting average. The senior catcher led OU to a 3-1 record, including a 2-1 series win at Kansas State over the weekend and an 8-7 victory at No. 14 TCU on Tuesday. In four games last week, Wise hit two home runs and drove in 11 runs while recording a .933 slugging percentage. He also scored five runs and walked once with a .563 on-base percentage. Wise tied a school record with five hits during Sunday’s finale and hit two of the Sooners’ 11 homers, which tied a Big 12 team record. The Apoka, Fla. native tallied a career-high seven RBI in the same contest and scored four more.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Kyle Gibson, Missouri, RHP, Jr., 6-6, 202, Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central
For the second week in a row, Gibson posted a complete-game win as he struck out a career-high 16 batters in the Tigers’ 3-2 victory over No. 3 Texas A&M. He gave up just two runs on five hits. Gibson’s only walk allowed on the night was an intentional pass in the eighth inning. The Greenfield, Ind. hurler retired the first 10 batters to the plate and 18 of the first 19 he faced. Gibson improves his record to 4-1 on the year and moved into MU’s top 10 career strikeouts (227) after Friday’s performance. He is currently tied for eighth place.
