For the second straight week UC Irvine collects Big West Pitcher of the Week honors and for the third consecutive week Cal State Fullerton receives Big West Player of the Week accolades. Daniel Bibona led the Anteaters to a 1-0 win over Nevada, while Christian Colon lifted the Titans to a 3-0 week.
Bibona held the Nevada Wolfpack to one hit to lead UC Irvine to a 1-0 shutout. The junior left-hander faced the minimum through five, striking out five of the first nine batters he faced. After issuing consecutive walks to lead off the sixth, the Lake Forest, Calif., native worked himself out of the jam by retiring the next three batters and went on to strike out four of the final five batters before handing the ball off to the Anteater bullpen in the eighth. Bibona’s 11 strikeouts are a season-high and one shy of his tying his career-best.
Colon went 8-for-17 (.615) and reached base in all but one plate appearance to help guide the Titans to a 3-0 sweep of Oral Roberts last weekend. The Corona, Calif., native returned to the Titan dugout only once after 15 plate appearances in the sweep, reaching on eight hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, two fielder’s choices, an error and the passed ball on a strikeout. His infield single in the eighth in the series finale extended his hitting streak to 13 games. The shortstop had two multi-hit games (4-for-5 and 3-for-3) and drove in five, while scoring seven runs as the Titans won their 15th of their last 16 games. Colon was also 2-for-2 in stolen bases on the week.
