GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech third baseman Matt Skole has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Duke’s Andrew Wolcott has been recognized as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for the period of March 15-22.
Skole, a freshman from Woodstock, Ga., went 10-for-15 (.667) with three home runs and 11 RBI in last weekend’s three-game series at Virginia Tech. Skole’s three-run homer highlighted a six-run ninth-inning comeback in the Yellow Jackets’ 10-9 win over the Hokies in the series opener.
Skole posted a career-high four hits, including his second home run of the series, in Saturday’s game. He then added another three-run homer in the fourth inning of Sunday’s series finale, which was the hit that gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for keeps. Skole finished that game 4-for-5 with five RBI
For the week, Skole compiled slugging percentage of 1.043 in the five games, helping Georgia Tech to a 4-1 record. He batted .565 (13-for-23) with three homers, two doubles and 12 RBI. A true freshman that has started every game at third base this season, Skole currently leads the team in homers (7) and stands second on the squad with a .389 batting average and in RBI (25).
Duke’s Wolcott beat his second straight top-10 opponent Saturday after holding No. 1 North Carolina to one earned run over seven complete innings. Wolcott held the Tar Heels scoreless for his first six innings before allowing two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh. The unearned runs ended a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings.
Wolcott has allowed just one earned run over his last 16 innings of work (0.56 ERA). The senior from Grayslake, Ill., retired 10 straight North Carolina batters at one point from the fourth through sixth innings.
The 6-foot-6, 240-pound right-hander extended a streak of five straight starts with at least 7.0 innings pitched. He is also on a run of 17 starts of at least 5.0 innings. North Carolina was just 2-for-12 (.167) with runners on base against Wolcott. The Tar Heels had just six hits in the game, which matched a season low for UNC.
Duke improved to 5-0 this season when putting Wolcott on the mound. Duke is 3-0 in the ACC when Wolcott starts, with wins over Virginia Tech, top-10 ranked Miami and top-ranked North Carolina.
