Duke 5 #1 UNC 4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Andrew Wolcott held No. 1 North Carolina to three runs – one earned – over seven complete innings to lead Duke to a 5-4 win over the top-ranked Tar Heels in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

Wolcott (4-0) beat North Carolina (17-3, 5-2 ACC) for the second straight year after scattering six hits, which matches a season-low for the Tar Heels. Wolcott, a 6-6, 240 pound senior, held the Tar Heels scoreless for his first six innings before two unearned runs in the seventh innings snapped his 15-inning scoreless streak. It was the second straight win over a ranked opponent for Wolcott, who shut out No. 6 Miami for seven innings in his last start.

Duke (13-7, 4-4 ACC) spotted Wolcott a 1-0 lead before he even toed the rubber and ran that to 3-0 in the second inning on a two-run homer by senior Tim Sherlock. Sherlock’s bomb, his first of the season, gave Wolcott all the run support he needed, as he kept Duke ahead until he exited after facing one batter in the eighth inning. Wolcott kept his ERA at 1.27 with the performance and extended his run of five straight outings of at least seven innings. Duke also improved to 5-0 this season when Wolcott starts on the mound.

#4 Miami (FL) 4 #21 Virginia 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The fourth-ranked University of Miami baseball team snapped No. 7 Virginia’s 19-game winning streak with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Cavaliers Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field. Down 3-0 with two outs and no one on in the top of the seventh, a single by Yasmani Grandal sparked a four-run UM rally, capped off by a Ryan Jackson two-run single that proved to be the game-winner.

Miami improved to 17-4 overall and 6-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the win while Virginia, who had the nation’s top record coming in, dropped to 19-1 and 5-1 in league play.

After Grandal’s single in the seventh, Dave DiNatale doubled and Nathan Melendres walked to load the bases for pinch-hitter Ted Blackman. With a 1-2 count, Blackman smacked a single through the right side, scoring UM’s first two runs of the contest. Scott Lawson then followed up Blackman’s hit with a walk, and that set up Jackson’s single to center that put the `Canes ahead for good.

Maryland 4 Boston College 3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Taylor Buran delivered a game-winning, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie and give the University of Maryland baseball team a 4-3 victory against Boston College Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field.

With runners on first and second with one out, Boston College pitcher Chris Kowalski was relieved by Mike Belfiore to set up a lefty-lefty matchup with Maryland designated hitter Jensen Pupa. Maryland head coach Terry Rupp countered by sending Buran to the plate.

Buran wasted no time, grounding Belfiore’s first pitch into right field. A.J. Casario, who singled with one out to begin the rally, was sent home on the play. Boston College right fielder Barry Butera made an excellent throw home to catcher Tony Sanchez and it appeared Casario was going to be thrown out. But Casario dislodged the ball from Sanchez’s mitt on his slide to score the winning run, eliciting a bench-clearing celebration in the infield.

Virginia Tech 9 #5 Georgia Tech 5

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Paired with three RBIs apiece from catcher Anthony Sosnoskie and third baseman Ronnie Shaban, Virginia Tech freshman Mathew Price pitched deep into the seventh inning to lead the Hokie baseball squad to a 9-5 upset of third-ranked Georgia Tech on Saturday night.

It was Disco Night at English Field, and with the Hokies wearing throwback, Houston Astros-circa-1975 jerseys, the right-hander from Marietta, Ga., took an 8-1 lead into the seventh. Though the Yellow Jackets pushed four runs across in that inning, they were all unearned, and Price left the game after 6.2 frames of work and a gutsy 140 pitches. He scattered nine hits and four walks, while striking out five, to earn his second win of the season against one loss. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Fisher tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings to pick up the first save of his career, lowering his team-leading ERA to 0.66 in the process.

The Hokies (13-7, 2-5 ACC) snapped a five-game conference skid with the win, while putting a halt to Georgia Tech’s (15-2, 5-1) overall 12-game winning streak.
