#1 North Carolina 8 Duke 5
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Levi Michael and Ben Bunting belted two-run home runs and finished with three hits apiece to key an 8-5 win for No. 1 North Carolina over Duke Friday in the series opener at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels (17-2, 5-1 ACC) extended their season-best winning streak to nine games and need just one more victory this weekend to lock up a point in the race for the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between UNC and Duke.
Michael, who was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI for his third career three-hit game, homered for the third straight game to give him eight on the season to share the ACC lead. Michael’s 26 RBI, including 18 in the last seven games, also lead the league.
Bunting was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI on his second homer of the season. Dustin Ackley and Mike Cavasinni added two hits each, and Greg Holt had a key two-run single in the fourth when Duke (12-7, 3-4 ACC) had trimmed the UNC lead to a single run.
#21 Virginia 9 #4 Miami (FL) 4
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 7 Virginia baseball team pushed its winning streak to 19 games Friday night with a 9-4 victory over No. 4 Miami at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers broke a three-all tie in the fifth inning and used strong pitching from Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.), Kevin Arico (So., Flemington, N.J.) and Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) to finish off the win.
UVa (19-0, 5-0 ACC) improved on its school-record winning streak, which also is the longest active streak in the country. The Cavaliers remained the only undefeated team in Division I this year. It also marked UVa’s first-ever 5-0 start in ACC play.
The Cavaliers battered reigning All-American Chris Hernandez (2-1) for seven runs (six earned), nine hits and two walks in 5.1 innings and handed the southpaw his first college loss.

#5 Georgia Tech 10 Virginia Tech 9
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Matt Skole’s three-run home run highlighted a six-run ninth inning comeback to lift No. 3 Georgia Tech (15-1, 5-0 ACC) to a 10-9 win over Virginia Tech (12-7, 1-5 ACC) Friday night at English Field.
The Yellow Jackets scored two in the eighth and added six in the ninth to earn the win and extend their winning streak to 12 games.
Tech began the ninth inning with back-to-back singles by Chase Burnette and Jeff Rowland, and Derek Dietrich followed with an RBI groundout to start the Yellow Jacket comeback. Jason Haniger then legged out a single to the pitcher, which put runners on the corners for Tony Plagman. The Yellow Jacket first baseman deposited a double down the left field line to pull the Jackets to within two runs of the Hokies.

#17 Florida State 5 #16 Clemson 2
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Seventeenth-ranked Florida State (10-7, 2-3 ACC) earned its fourth straight victory over 16th-ranked Clemson (13-5, 4-3 ACC) taking game one 5-2 Friday night on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. Three of the five runs scored in game one came on two outs as the Seminoles put together some timely hitting in handing the Atlantic Division Tigers their third conference loss of the season.
Freshman Sean Gilmartin once again turned in another fantastic performance as the Moorpark, Calif., native moved to 4-1 on the year. The southpaw worked 6.1 innings allowing just one run on six hits. Despite walking a career-high four batters, Gilmartin surpassed the seven strikeout plateau for the third consecutive game as he recorded eight strikeouts Friday night.
The hitting in game one was spread out as eight Seminoles recorded one hit. Tommy Oravetz, Stuart Tapley, Jason Stidham and Rafael Lopez each registered an RBI, but it was Lopez’ solo home run in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the game-winner.
Boston College 6 Maryland 2
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Boston College baseball team scored four runs in the top of the first and senior JB MacDonald took care of the rest as the Eagles defeated Maryland, 6-2, Friday night at Shipley Field. MacDonald threw 7.2 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits for his second win of the season.
MacDonald dropped his ERA to 2.41 this season. He has allowed just nine earned runs in 33.2 innings. He struck out seven Terps on the evening and walked just two.
Sophomores Matt Hamlet and Mike Sudol both had three hits in the game while sophomore Mickey Wiswall added two. Hamlet scored a pair of runs while junior Barry Butera had two RBI.

Wake Forest 6 NC State 3
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman Zach White struck out a career-high eight batters in a dominating 3 1/3 innings pitched and Tyler Smith drove in the game-winning run on a pinch-hit single the bottom of the sixth inning as Wake Forest earned its first conference win of the season with a 6-3 victory over NC State on Friday night.
The Demon Deacons move to 10-8 and 1-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while NC State drops to 10-10 and 1-6 in league play.
White continued the impressive start to his collegiate career, turning in his best outing of the season and earning the first victory of his college career. Eight of the ten outs White recorded were strikeouts. He allowed no runs on two hits in 3 1/3 innings and lowered his earned run average on the season to 0.60.
