The 4th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler baseball team bested American Southwest Conference foe Texas-Dallas, 8-6, on Tuesday night at Irwin Field in a non-conference match-up.
UT Tyler (19-4) jumped out an early lead by scoring three runs in the first, however UT Dallas (12-10) pulled within a run by scoring two in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, the Patriots added two runs to extend the lead to 5-2. The Comets added two runs in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the eighth to tie the game at five all.
In the bottom of the eighth, UT Tyler added three runs to take the lead for the final time. UT Dallas attempted to rally in the top of ninth, but added just one run and fell 8-6.
Senior Joe Towns (Carrollton, Texas) belted a homerun and put three runs across the plate in the game to play an integral part in the win.
Senior Beau Ziegler (N. Wales, Pa.) came in and pitched the final one and two-thirds innings, allowing just one run and striking out two to pick up the victory on the mound.
The Patriots will now travel to Clarksville, Ark., to resume ASC play on Friday against Ozarks. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
