PHILADELPHIA (3/17/09) – Penn sophomore Jeremy Maas (Alpharetta, GA / Chattahoochee) and Temple junior Ryan Thomas (Aliquippa, PA / Center) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the head coaches and sports information offices.
Maas batted .516 (16-for-31) over seven games last week as the Quakers competed at the Rollins Baseball Week in Winter Park, FL. He drove in 10 runs and had six doubles and two home runs. His best performance was when he went 3-for-4, with a double, home run and three RBI against Maine. Maas is batting .524 with 13 RBI for Penn this season.
Thomas did not allow an earned run in a career-high eight innings on Sunday in a 5-1 win over Cleveland State. He scattered four hits and struck out a career-best six batters. The Aliquippa, PA native is now 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Monday during the season. The fourth annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
