DENVER, CO – New Mexico State shortstop Bryan Marquez and Nevada right-handed pitcher Derek Achelpohl have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Mar. 9-15.
Marquez, a senior from Bonny Lake, Wash. (The Dalles HS), hit .600 in helping the Aggies to a 4-1 record last week. Marquez had a season-high three hits and tied a career high with five RBI as he hit a solo home run and the game-tying grand slam to lead NMSU to a 10-inning, 11-10 victory over Northern Colorado. Marquez had two grand slams on the weekend, and finished the week going 9-for-15 at the plate with nine hits, 13 RBI, four home runs and six walks.
Achelpohl, a senior from Madera, Calif. (Madera HS/Fresno City College), made two starts on the week at UC Davis and against Oregon. Achelpohl pitched two shutout innings and did not give up a hit in his start at UC Davis. He registered three strikeouts after facing seven batters in his two innings of work. Achelpohl threw 7.0 innings and picked up the 2-1 win against Oregon, compiling seven strikeouts while only allowing the single run. Overall on the week, Achelpohl pitched 9.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA.
The other hitter of the week nominations were Fresno State junior infielder Alan Ahmady, Hawai‘i freshman center fielder Kolten Wong, Louisiana Tech senior second baseman Kevin Winn and Sacramento State sophomore shortstop Derrick Chung.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were Fresno State freshman Josh Poytress, Hawai‘i sophomore Josh Slaats, Louisiana Tech senior Dylan Moseley, New Mexico State junior Daniel Simon, Sacramento State junior Tommy Elrod and San Jose State senior Scott Sobczak.
