FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State center fielder Chris Murrill has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and Southeastern Louisiana right hander Ryan Collins has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Murrill, the Colonels’ lead-off hitter, was 11-for-17 (.647) at the plate, scoring six runs as the Colonels won four consecutive games, including the three-game conference series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. It was the first sweep in league play for the Colonels since the 2007 season. The junior from Mobile, Ala., stole six bases in six attempts, bringing his total to 14 on the year. He recorded three doubles, including two in Nicholls’ Saturday win over the Islanders.
Collins picked up a win and a save over the weekend to lead the Lions to a sweep of McNeese State. The senior from Chalmette, La., nailed down his first save of the season on Friday, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out two in 2 1/3 innings of relief to help seal a 9-6 comeback victory. On Sunday, Collins threw four innings of scoreless relief against the Cowboys to pick up his second win of the year. He struck out three and allowed just two hits in the 7-5 come-from-behind win. Collins did not allow a run in 6 1/3 innings this week.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Sam Houston State second baseman Braeden Riley, UT Arlington designated hitter Matt Otteman and Southeastern Louisiana infielder Ty Summerlin. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Central Arkansas right hander Jeremy Cloud, Lamar right hander Matison Smith and UT Arlington right hander Jason Mitchell. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.
Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
