HBU picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-13 on the year while TSU falls to 7-7.
HOUSTON – On a soggy day at Husky Field, the HBU Huskies defeated Texas Southern, 5-2, in a game shortened to five innings as a result of rain.
The game remained scoreless through three innings as neither team managed a hit before the fourth. In the top of the fourth, TSU got a leadoff walk followed by a double play. With two outs, the Tigers got two consecutive singles and a double to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
The Huskies answered in the bottom half as Travis Fuquay drew a leadoff walk and then David Mark singled to center field to put two men on. Leo Delgado and Beau Warren drew back-to-back walks to score HBU’s first run. Senior Andrew Taccolini drove in another run with a single to right followed by Johnathon Moore pushing across another run on a hit by pitch. The Huskies got their fourth run on a double play and then Taccolini made it 5-2 on a wild pitch.
After the top of the fifth inning, the game was called by the umpires due to rain as the field conditions continued to deteriorate.
HBU starter Tristan Gaines struck out one better per inning to finished with five strikeouts for the game as he picked up the first win for HBU on the season. The junior is now 1-2 on the year as he allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking three.
Taccolini was 1-2 in the game with one RBI and one run scored. The senior now stands at 168 career runs batted in, one shy of tying the all-time record. Mark had the Huskies’ only other hit in the game.
The Huskies and Tigers are scheduled to play a single game Sunday at MacGregor Park at 2:00 pm but the status of that game remains uncertain. Check back at www.hbuhuskies.com for any updates.
