FRISCO, Texas – UTSA outfielder Jose Hernandez has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and Central Arkansas right hander Jeremy Cloud has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Hernandez was a one-man wrecking crew in leading UTSA to a 3-1 record last week. His top game of the week was a three-homer, six-RBI performance in Friday’s 11-10 win against Southeastern Louisiana in the conference opener on Friday. Not only did he tie the program’s single-game record with his three long balls, but his walk-off two-run shot with two down in the ninth completed a five-run rally. Hernandez, a senior from Anaheim, Calif., and product of Servite High School, had at least two hits in all four contests last week, a total of seven extra-base hits (25 total bases) and 11 RBIs. He leads the Roadrunners in batting average (.452), runs (18), doubles (7), home runs (7), total bases (49), RBI (20), slugging percentage (1.167), walks (7), hit by pitch (4) and on-base percentage (.556).

Cloud was one pitch away from a perfect game in Central Arkansas’ Southland opener at Stephen F. Austin, a 9-0 victory. It was the first career shutout for the senior from North Little Rock Ark., and product of North Little Rock High School. He allowed a bloop single in the fifth inning, then erased that with a double play. He struck out five and walked none, while going to a two-ball count four times in the game. Cloud is now 2-0 on the year after the first shutout for the Bears since joining the Southland Conference. The Bears’ pitching staff put together a 29-inning scoreless streak.

Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Northwestern State second baseman Chase Lyles, Texas State first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and Sam Houston State first baseman Nick Zaleski. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Sam Houston State right hander Sean Weatherford, Texas State right hander Zach Tritz and Southeastern Louisiana right hander Josh Janway. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.

Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
