COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNLV junior Drew Beuerlein and San Diego State junior Stephen Strasburg have been named the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Beuerlein, from Scottsdale, Ariz., batted .643 (9-for-14) from the plate, with three triples, nine RBI and eight runs scored, as the Rebels went 4-0 vs. Butler last weekend. In the 9-2 series-opening win, Beuerlein went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. In a 19-10 win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, he went 3-for-5 with two triples, two RBI and two runs scored. In the Rebels’ 24-5 win in the second game of the doubleheader, Beuerlein went 2-for-3 with a triple, four RBI and three runs scored. In the final game of the series, Beuerlein went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI as UNLV completed the sweep with a 14-2 win.

Strasburg, a San Diego, Calif., native, went eight innings at 11th-ranked San Diego, striking out 18 and walking one, while allowing a pair of runs in SDSU’s 5-3 win over the Toreros. The 18 strikeouts rank as the second most in a game in MWC history. After giving up the two runs in the third inning, Strasburg retired the next 11 batters in row including nine via the strikeout. He struck out the side in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. He allowed just two runners from the fourth through eighth innings, one on an infield single and the other on a wild pitch on a third strike. His performance earned Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week recognition for the second consecutive week.
