South Carolina has opened this baseball season in a brand new, top of the line stadium. In building the new facility, South Carolina used their commitment to developing alternative-energy to create a scoreboard powered partly by a hydrogen fuel cell. It was devised by South Carolina’s College of Engineering and Computing thanks to a grant from the South Carolina Research Authority.
The technology is cost-efficient, and the university already uses it in one of its water-heating devices for an on-campus residence hall. It is the world’s first fuel-cell-powered scoreboard, and South Carolina hopes its success will be a spring board for other fuel-cell-powered endeavors. Along with the scoreboard, the stadium will have a replica of the actual working fuel cell on public display to allow fans to learn more about fuel cells as well as how it powers the scoreboard.
