COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Utah junior Rick Cornu and San Diego State junior Stephen Strasburg have been named the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Cornu, from Fallon, Nev., batted .444 (8-for-18) from the plate, with three home runs, one double, six runs scored and 12 RBI, as the Utes went 3-1 at Cal State Bakersfield last weekend. In the 12-1 series-opening win, Cornu went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, five RBI and two runs scored. In a 10-8 loss in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader split, he went 2-for-4 with two more home runs, four RBI and two runs scored. In the Utes’ 10-8 win in the second game of the doubleheader, he went 3-for-5 with an RBI double and two more runs scored. He also drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth to bring home the eventual game-winning run for Utah.

Strasburg, a San Diego, Calif., native, struck out 16 batters in 6.2 innings on the mound in San Diego State’s 5-2 win over Nevada. The 16 K’s are the third-highest in a single game in MWC history. Strasburg fanned seven of the first nine batters he faced and struck out the side four times. He also gave up just five hits, two earned runs and one walk, while the Wolf Pack hit just .167 against him on the night. Strasburg’s performance earned him Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week recognition.
