After turning in a dominating performance in defeating the top-ranked team in the nation, Rice junior RHP Ryan Berry has been named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for the period ending, March 1. The Hitter of the Week honor went to Southern Miss senior OF Bo Davis, who helped the Golden Eagles to a 7-0 start with four big performances this past week.
Berry turned in one of the most outstanding performances of the young college baseball season, throwing a complete-game, shutout victory over No.1 Texas A&M on Saturday night. The Humble, Texas native allowed just two hits (one through the first eight innings), struck out 12 and did not walk a batter. Berry registered six three-up, three-down innings, never faced more than four batters in an inning and had three frames in which he threw single digit pitches. He threw 102 pitches on the night, 69 for strikes. Berry was named the Most Valuable Player of the Houston College Classic. This is the fifth time in his career that he has been named C-USA Pitcher of the Week.
Davis paced the Golden Eagles in four victories last week, hitting safely in each game and finishing the week 8-for-16 (.500) at the plate. He homered in three of the games (twice to open the game), drove in six runs and scored eight times from his lead-off spot. Davis also walked three times, giving him a .579 on-base percentage and a 1.063 slugging percentage. The native of Meridian, Miss. added a pair of stolen bases and had a sacrifice bunt.
