GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State outfielder Tyler Holt has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Miami’s David Gutierrez received Pitcher of the Week honors.
Holt led fifth-ranked Florida State to a series victory over Auburn as the Seminoles took two of three from the Tigers. The sophomore center fielder hit .714 in three games registering 10 hits in 14 at-bats. He finished the three-game series slugging 1.357, collecting four doubles, a triple and a home run. Holt tallied 19 total bases against the Tigers, while posting an on-base percentage of .750.
Holt tied a career-high with five hits in Game 2, his third five-hit game of his career. He reached base on all five plate appearances in Game 3 collecting a home run, two doubles, a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Holt’s current streak of reaching base on 10 consecutive plate appearances is three off the school record of 13 set by Paul Sorrento in 1985.
Holt, a Gainesville, Fla. native, had six straight hits at one point during the Auburn series. On the season, Holt is hitting an ACC-best .643 with 18 hits in 28 at-bats. He is slugging 1.107 with eight doubles, one triple and one home run.
Gutierrez was victorious in Miami’s 2-1 series-clinching win over 12th-ranked Florida on Saturday, holding the Gators scoreless in a career-long seven innings of work. The Miami native’s efforts helped the Hurricanes become the first team since Georgia in 2006 to sweep a three-game series in Gainesville.
Gutierrez stayed in command throughout, scattering six hits to earn his first win of the season and improve his career record to 8-0.
Along with relievers Taylor Wulf and Kyle Bellamy, Gutierrez held the Gators – who were averaging 8.8 runs per game coming in – to their lowest run total of the year. On the season, Gutierrez owns a 0.75 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 12 innings of work.
