The 5th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler baseball team went 1-1 during Saturday’s doubleheader at Walt Driggers Field in Abilene to avoid losing all three games of the three game series.
UT Tyler (10-3) narrowly lost game one, 4-3, but bounced back with an 8-5 win in game two.
In game one, the Patriots jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but a three run fourth inning and a one run homerun in the fifth proved to be enough to put UT Tyler away.
The Patriots attempted a comeback in the ninth inning, but only scored one of the two runs needed to tie the game.
In game two, UT Tyler once again jumped out to an early lead only to have McMurry (7-4) tie the game. However, this time the Patriots were able to pull away and pick up the win.
Junior Nathan Skeen (White Oak, Texas) had a breakout day for UT Tyler by going 4-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and a walk.
Senior Brock Lemire (Nederland, Texas) also had a big day with four hits, three RBIs, two doubles and a homerun.
Senior Beau Ziegler (N. Wales, Pa.) picked up the lone pitching win for UT Tyler on the weekend. Ziegler improved to 2-0 on the season by allowing no runs off of three hits with five strikeouts over four complete innings.
UT Tyler will return to action on Tuesday for a single-game in Sherman against Austin College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
