PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the 2009 baseball season underway, sophomore third baseman Greg Hopkins of St. John’s has been tabbed the first BIG EAST Player of the Week. Sophomore RHP Sean Black of Seton Hall has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Hopkins helped St. John’s to a 2-1 showing at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, batting .538 with a .923 slugging percentage in three games. He had multiple hits in all three games and had multiple extra-base hits in each of the Red Storm’s wins. He went 3-for-6 with a double and a triple in a 15-6 win against Penn State and was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in an 18-3 win against Iowa.
Black scattered four singles and allowed just one unearned run in six innings to pick up the decision in Seton Hall’s 11-2 win against Minnesota in the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, helping the Pirates finish 2-1 in the event. He struck out two and held the Golden Gophers to a combined .211 batting average.
