This is the second in a five-part installment previewing the 2009 University of Cincinnati baseball season. UC opens its 2009 campaign on Friday, Feb. 20, at the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge. The Bearcats play Purdue University at 1 p.m. at the Raymond A. Naimoli Complex in St. Petersburg, Fla.

UP THE MIDDLE

There is no doubt that 2008 BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year Josh Harrison will be missed at second base, but an energetic group of young players look to cement themselves in the middle, led by returning shortstop Chris Peters.

In his rookie season in Red and Black, Peters gained experience playing in 52 games, which included 46 starts. Peters had a productive first season at the plate and on the base paths with a .241 average, 18 RBI, 32 runs, and was 7-of-8 in stolen bases.

Freshman Cincinnati native T.J. Jones is set to handle the daily duties at second base for the Bearcats. Jones will have to learn on the job, but owns all the necessary tools to be a factor for UC for years to come.

Fellow newcomers Zach Collaros, Beach Brooks, and Kiley Jones all bring versatility to the squad with the ability to play second base, shortstop, and third base.
