The 12th-ranked University of Texas at Tyler baseball team outscored Castleton State College by a combined score of 31-2 as the Patriots swept Sunday’s doubleheader at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (4-1) got their bats going early by taking down the Spartans 19-1 in the first game. In the second game, it was more of the same as UT Tyler won the back end of the doubleheader by a score of 12-1.

On the day, UT Tyler scored 31 runs off of 30 hits, compared to just two runs off of nine hits by Castleton (0-2).

Senior Jeremy Harding (Houston, Texas) led the Patriots in the doubleheader by having a career day, going a perfect 8-for-8 with four runs, five doubles and six RBIs over the two games.

Junior Austin Newell (Kennedale, Texas) also had a great day for the Patriots, as he went 3-for-4 in game two with three runs, two RBIs and a two-triple fourth inning.

Seniors Jared Hood (Marshall, Texas) and Brock Lemire (Nederland, Texas) each recorded homeruns on the afternoon. Lemire went yard in the first game, with Hood following suit in game two.

On the mound for UT Tyler, seniors Brett Holland (Lindale, Texas) and Blake Booher (Hurst, Texas) each picked up a win on the day, with neither allowing a run. Holland gave up just five hits and struck out eight batters, while Booher allowed only one hit with four strikeouts.

Senior Beau Ziegler (North Wales, Pa.) pitched the final inning of game two and struck out all three batters he faced. Ziegler has now stuck out every batter he has faced so far this season.

The same two teams will return to Irwin Field on Wednesday for a single game beginning at 6 p.m.
