AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s baseball team took the rubber game in their three-game series with Lincoln Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field, 4-2.

Lincoln (1-6, 1-6 HC) got on the board first, scoring a run in the fourth inning. Third baseman James Johndrow drew a walk and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Seth Blackwell.

St. Edward’s (6-4, 5-2 HC) tied the game in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Daniel Rufini singled down the right field line, and after two sacrifice bunts, came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Hilltoppers tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning. Right fielder Justin Shufelt drove in a run on a double to left field and Rufini had an RBI single up the middle.

Looking for insurance, St. Edward’s struck again in the eighth inning. Second baseman Drew Cross reached base on an error by Johndrow. He then stole second base and came around to score on a single to right center field off of the bat of right fielder Mike Hancock.

Trying to close it out in the ninth inning, the Hilltoppers made things very interesting. St. Edward’s defense committed four errors in the inning, allowing one run to score. They were able to get out of the jam though, winning the game, 4-2.

Rufini pace the Hilltopper offense, going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Shufelt and Hancock each contributed RBI’s as well.

On the mound, Patrick Scholl (2-1) was lights out. School worked six innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out six Blue Tiger hitters. Jonathan Burns earned his second save of the season. Burns closed out the games with three innings of work, allowing only one unearned run.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday afternoon as they travel to San Antonio to begin a series against rival St. Mary’s. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
