Cullowhee, N.C. – With the first pitch of the 2009 season just nine days away, the Western Carolina Catamount baseball team continued its preparations over the weekend with a trio of intrasquad scrimmage situations. Team practice commenced the first weekend of February, giving WCU nearly 20 days of practice to gear up for its season opener.

WCU opens the season with a three-game home series against Bowling Green on February 20-22 in Cullowhee.

“We are working hard and progressing through our first week, knowing that we still have a long way to go before we open our season in less than two weeks,” said second-year head coach Bobby Moranda. “Our guys really have worked hard during the off-season both in the weight room getting stronger, and in the classroom. Their maturity is starting to show through in everything we ask them to do. My coaching staff and I, as well as our players, are ready for the 2009 season to get started.”

According to Rivals.com, senior RHP Mike Tavernier was the lone Catamount named to its preseason All-Southern Conference team with WCU tabbed eighth out of the 11-team league.

The official preseason honors and the coaches’ preseason poll are scheduled to be announced Thursday by the SoCon office.
