CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State baseball team scrimmaged Wednesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. And in the process, the Beavers got their first workouts in a pair of their newest set of uniforms.
The club split into two teams during the intra-squad scrimmage. One club wore an all black top, adorned with the word “Beavers” in orange. The other dressed in orange with “Beavers” also on the front, this time in black. The pair of uniforms are two of the six the Beavers will have available to them this season.
Oregon State will have at its disposal its usual cream uniform with the English scripted “Beavers” across the front that has been so popular since the Beavers gave the nation a chance to see them at Omaha. Also back from last season is the gray-pinstriped uniforms Oregon State debuted last season. Like each of the six uniforms, the pinstripes also have “Beavers” across the front but in the more traditional Oregon State font.
Two more uniforms will be seen this season. The first is an all white uniform, similar to the black and orange tops, with “Beavers” across the front. Lastly, there is also a gray uniform with no pinstripes, similar in design to the white, black and orange uniforms.
It is still to be seen which uniforms will be worn when the Beavers open the 2009 season at Tennessee.
With less than two weeks remaining before opening day, the Beavers will be practicing through the end of the week and then most of next week before making the trip to Knoxville on Thursday, Feb. 19.
On Wednesday, the club scrimmaged for approximately two hours at Goss Stadium, with Sam Gaviglio starting on the mound for the black squad and Kraig Sitton getting the nod for the orange.
The Beavers are in or near the top 25 in each of the major polls this season. Oregon State is ranked 25th by Baseball America and 24th by Rivals.com. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has OSU at No. 31, while Collegiate Baseball, the first poll to come out this season, puts the Beavers at No. 38 to open the season. The Sporting News, which does not have a weekly poll, placed Oregon State at No. 15 in its annual baseball yearbook.
Pacific-10 Conference coaches also selected the Beavers to finish fourth in the league this season, although Oregon State did receive two first-place votes.
Available now are a number of season tickets for the 2009 season. The season-ticket packages include 23 games at Goss Stadium and the three-game series against Missouri State go for $400 and can be obtained at the ticket office at legendary Gill Coliseum, by calling 1-800-GOBEAVS or by visiting osubeavers.com. Single-game tickets for the 2009 season will be made available to the public on Feb. 16.
Additionally, tickets to the 2009 Papé Grand Slam will go on sale on Feb. 11. The 2009 Slam will take place from March 13-15 and will feature Oregon State and perennial Midwest power Missouri State in a three-game series at PGE Park in Portland.
Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, including www.ticketmaster.com, and by calling (503) 224-4400. Tickets will also be made available at the PGE Park box office beginning Monday February 23rd.
Single-game tickets for the Papé Grand Slam are $10 for adults and $5 for youths (ages 3-18), with each seat being general admission. Oregon State students who present their ID on game day can also get seats for $5.
Those who have season tickets for the 2009 Oregon State baseball season will have a specific number of sections reserved for them on the Oregon State dugout side of PGE Park.
The 2009 season officially opens Feb. 20 when the Beavers start a three-game series against Tennessee in Knoxville.
