QUEENS, N.Y. – Head baseball coach Ed Blankmeyer has announced that redshirt senior Nick Luisi and junior Brian Kemp will serve as co-captains for the upcoming 2009 season. The pair was selected by the players.

“Both players are great leaders and have paid their dues in this program,” said Blankmeyer. “They understand what it takes to be successful and are well aware of the expectations of this program both on and off the field.”

Luisi, a left-handed pitcher, sat out the 2008 season while recovering from surgery. In his St. John’s career, the southpaw is 5-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 21 appearances, including seven starts. Luisi has tallied 40 strikeouts, while holding the opposition to just a .223 average in 61.2 innings of work.

A freshman All-American and third team All-BIG EAST selection in 2007, Kemp has led the team in stolen bases in each of the past two seasons. The centerfielder boasts a .352 career batting average and has collected 130 hits in 92 games.

The Red Storm opens the 2009 campaign with a trio of games in Florida as part of the inaugural BIG EAST-Big Ten Challenge. St. John’s will play Penn State on Feb. 20 in the season opener, before games against Iowa State (Feb. 21) and Michigan (Feb. 22).
