AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Baseball team posted a 3-0 shutout over the Texas Exes in the annual Alumni Game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Longhorns’ young pitching staff highlighted the afternoon as they allowed just four hits in a shutout performance. Freshman Taylor Jungmann and sophomore Brandon Workman each worked three scoreless innings. Jungmann allowed just one hit and two walks. Workman yielded one hit while fanning two.
Freshmen Sam Stafford and Andrew McKirahan both worked one scoreless frame. Stafford allowed one walk and McKirahan retired all three batters he faced, including one strikeout.
Senior Austin Wood picked up the save with a shutout ninth, allowing two hits and striking out one.
The Longhorns scored two runs in the fifth inning on a pair of doubles. With two outs and Jordan Etier on second base with the assist of an error, Kevin Keyes lined a double down the leftfield line to break the scoring seal. Cameron Rupp followed with a double to the gap in right centerfield to stake the Longhorns to a 2-0 lead.
Texas tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Cameron Rupp drew a walk and Russell Moldenhauer singled through the left side to put runners at first and second.
Kevin Lusson and Tim Maitland were both hit by a pitch to push the third run across.
Kyle Lusson went 2-for-2 for the Longhorns and Keyes, Rupp and Maitland each got RBI.
Jordan Danks went 2-for-3 for the Alumni and Drew Stubbs and J.D. Reininger each added a hit.
Texas opens the season on Friday, Feb. 20 when the Longhorns host Illinois-Chicago in a 3 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
