Tampa, Fla.- The second ranked University of Tampa (3-0) baseball team takes both games in the double header against Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia College and State University (2-1). Tampa needed an extra frame to take the first game 6-5, then finished the day with a 3-1 victory.
In the first game, the Spartans found themselves down 5-0 in the bottom of fifth. Tampa then got on the board on a Ken Gregory double to left center scoring Jared Simon. Gregory would then score on a Jesus Barroso single. UT would score one more time in the inning to cut the GCSU lead to two.
The Spartans added runs in the seventh and eighth to even the score at five. Tampa righty Danny Keefe threw three scoreless innings while striking out four to hold the Bobcats at bay. Then in the tenth, senior transfer Nick Nordgren, who entered earlier as a pinch runner, hit a homer to left center to complete the Spartan comeback. Alex Koronis picked up the victory after tossing two scoreless innings for his first win of the season.
In game two, GCSU got out to an early lead in the third on the strength of a Derek Johns sac fly. UT would respond in the fourth when Steven Broschofsky scored on catcher Garrett Maines’ single. Following Maines, were a string of three more consecutive singles by Dagmar Pena, Tyler Cox, and Correy Figueroa that gave Tampa a 3-1 lead.
Right hander Tommy Meagher earned his first win of the season after throwing four innings while allowing one unearned run on one hit, and striking out five. Relieving Meagher was freshman Max Kreuter who picked up his first career save in his Spartan debut. Kreuter pitched three scoreless innings while surrendering only one hit and fanning three.
The two teams will meet for the rubber game tomorrow at noon.
