BALTIMORE-To mark the 42nd season of UMBC baseball and practice starting next week, head coach John Jancuska announced that seniors Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.), Ryan Morse (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) and Dave Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) have been named captains for the 2009 squad. The trio went through an interview process with the coaching staff and were voted tri-captains by their teammates.
“We are excited that three will serve as tri-captains because they exemplify all that is important to UMBC baseball, including academics, character and leadership on and off the field,” said Jancuska.
Retz, a 6-1 first baseman, came to UMBC after two years at CCBC Catonsville, started 41 games while playing 45 for the Retrievers. He hit .322 with 48 hits, driving in 35 runs. An excellent fielder, Retz posted a .992 fielding percentage with only three errors.

He recorded a 1-1 record with a 5.02 ERA, while earning four saves, tied for fourth in the America East. He was named to the 2008 America East All-Academic Team and was named the Most Valuable Teammate by the team each of the past two seasons.
A 6-2 catcher, Warrenfeltz has seen action in 21 games in two years as a Retriever, starting eight. In 2008, he batted .250 with eight hits and three runs scored.
The Retrievers begin the 2009 season at Navy on Wednesday, March 4 at 2:30.
