Augie Garrido spoke from his heart today when he stated that he made a horrible mistake at a Univeristy of Texas press conference. The university stated that Garrido will be suspended for the first four games for the 2009 season.
Texas athletics director DeLoss Dodds said he stands behind Garrido. No other terms of the suspension were disclosed.
“I know he will do the right thing, and I know he will do it with integrity, and I know he will do it with strength,” Dodds said.
“I made a serious mistake,” Garrido said. “I drank alcohol. I got behind the wheel of a car, and that’s a bad decision — a real bad decision. … I have violated, on my own with my decision, the mission of the university. I am solely responsible for that. This is not a reflection of the university.”
“I sincerely apologize,” the coach said. “It’s heartfelt. It’s honest.”

Augie needs to resign. Sure he made a serious mistake, but it was a mistake he knew better than to make. He disgraced himself, the University of Texas, college baseball, and to every kid he has taught and coached.
Would not be at all surprised if part of the deal (never to be disclosed publically) is for Augie to more “gracefully” resign after this coming season. Given the suspension covers UT’s four game opening series at home vs. powerhouse University of Illinois – Chicago, his absence should not even be felt. More interesting will be the plea deal he strikes with the City of Austin’s Police Department for the DWI charge.
UIC did make the NCAA Tourney each of the last two seasons. They are not a powerhouse but they are a decent program though.
