BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Baseball staff has named tri-captains for the 2009 season. Seniors Chris Hervey and Joe Vicini and junior Matt Bashore will serve as captains this year. Vicini is in his second year as a captain, while Hervey and Bashore are both captains for the first time.
Vicini was named a captain in his sophomore season of 2007 in addition to this year. The Rural Valley, Pa., native has been a crucial clubhouse leader on and off the diamond in his four years for the Hoosiers. He was among IU’s leaders in appearances out of the bullpen in each of his first two seasons before battling injuries to make 11 appearances in 2008.
Hervey has improved each of his three seasons, bursting onto the scene with a .373 average in 2008. He was named to the 2008 All-Big Ten Tournament Team after going 12-for-18 with seven RBI and nine runs. He also set a school record in 2008 by being hit by 20 pitches.
Bashore had a breakthrough sophomore season, being named First Team All-Big Ten after leading the conference and posting the fifth-highest total in school history with 86 strikeouts on the year. The Tipp City, Ohio, native had a record of 7-3 and posted a 3.59 ERA on the season and was one of just two players to be named Big Ten Player of the Week three times.
The Hoosiers will begin their 2009 campaign against West Virginia in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 20 in St. Petersburg, Fla. IU will also play Georgetown and South Florida in the three-day event. Tickets to the Challenge are on sale now at bigeastbigtenchallenge.com.
