Nolan Ryan, Scott Linebrink slated as special guests

SAN MARCOS – National Baseball Hall of Fame member and Texas Ranger President Nolan Ryan along with current Chicago White Sox pitcher and former Texas State Bobcat Scott Linebrink will highlight the Texas State Bobcats Diamond Club lead-off dinner program as the guest speakers at the inaugural fundraising event. In conjunction with the Bobcats baseball team, the Diamond Club will host its first-annual fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Embassy Suites.

Ryan, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on January 5, 1999, honoring his 27-year major league career. In that span, the decorated athlete pitched 5,714 strikeouts and an all-time record seven no-hitters, the highest total of any player in history, a mark that has yet to be broken. For these accomplishments, Ryan was named Man of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year during his career. Ryan now serves as the 10th President of the Texas Rangers program, returning to the team he was affiliated with for nearly 15 years.

Linebrink, who is currently enjoying a successful career with the Chicaco White Sox, competed at Texas State during the 1997 baseball season. Linebrink transferred to Texas State and in his lone season with the Bobcats led the team to its first-ever Regional appearance. Linebrink aided Texas State to a 38-26 championship season and concluded his 1997 year as a second round draft pick by the San Francisco Giants. He has spent eight years in the major leagues since his debut with the Houston Astros in 2000.

The Embassy Suites is located at 1001 McCarty Lane and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Business attire is preferred. Tables can be purchased for the event at $400 with eight guests, $200 for 4 guests and individual tickets can be purchased for $60.

Reservations can be made by contacting Carolyn Miller at 512.245.3383 or by e-mail at cm65@txstate.edu.

The Diamond Club was established last year by head coach Ty Harrington and a group of faithful Bobcat baseball supporters to generate community and monetary support for the Texas State baseball program. The Diamond Club is open to family, friends and fans of Bobcat baseball and information on joining will be available.
