Cambridge, Mass. – Harvard announced its preliminary 2009 baseball schedule. After recent years of traveling to Florida and California during the early portion of its schedule, Harvard will travel to Louisiana and Alabama this time around.
Harvard opens the campaign on a 20-game road trip, including a 16-game slate of games in the deep South. A number of new opponents will face off against Joe Walsh’s Crimson including the season-opening, four-game series against Jacksonville State.
After traveling to Jacksonville State March 6-8, Harvard returns to Alabama the following weekend, March 13-15, for a four-game set at Alabama-Birmingham.
Harvard will take its annual spring trip March 19-29, with the early portion of the trip starting in Louisiana before ending with Ivy League play back East.
In Louisiana, Harvard plays a three-game series at Centenary College (Shreveport) and single games against Louisiana-Monroe and the University of New Orleans. The Crimson’s trip is highlighted by two games against Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge scheduled for single games on March 24 and 25.
Ivy League play begins Saturday, March 28 at Columbia before a Sunday twinbill at Penn.
Harvard plays its home opener against Holy Cross April 1. The Crimson will play 22 games in the month with home games against Cornell, Princeton, Yale, Boston College, Dartmouth and Northeastern.
The first round of the 20th annual Beanpot Tournament is scheduled for April 7 when Harvard takes on Northeastern. Boston College and UMass will also play with the winning and losing pairings set to meet April 13 at Fenway Park.
The 2009 Ivy League Championship tournament will be held May 2-3 at the site of the Gehrig Division champion.
