The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with the Top 50 players to watch in the season. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1. We continue our list today with junior RHP Alex White from North Carolina.

Alex White is a resident of Greenville North Carolina where he played four years at D.H. Conley High School. He was named the 2006 North Carolina Player of the Year in his senior year. He was named a First-team All-American by TPX while Baseball America named him to their Third-team. He led the team to state titles in 2006 and 2005. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the 14th round but were not able to come to terms with him.

White stepped right into the Carolina rotation as a freshman in 2007 as he served mainly as the Saturday starter. He had a record of 6-7 with a 4.94 ERA while striking out 83 batters in 98.1 innings. He struggled with his control on the year as he walked 48 batters. Most of his struggles came during the NCAA Tournament as he let up 23 of his 54 runs during his four postseason starts. He was named as a second team All-Freshman All-American by Rivals. He spent the summer with the Chatham A’s of the Cape Cod League where he went 2-1 with a 2.10 ERA in seven appearances and 25.2 innings of work.

White became the number 1 starter in the 2008 season where he had a 13-3 with a 2.83 ERA. He ended up pitching in 101.1 innings holding batters to a .215 average against while striking out 113 batters but still had a substantial amount of walks by allowing 42. He earned second-team ABCA All-America honors and was selected a third-team All-America by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. He was also a member First-team All-ACC.

We should have some reports on White from the upcoming season from our great staff of reporters so stay tuned for complete coverage of his junior season where he should be selected very high in the 2009 MLB Draft.
