Quinnipiac signs six for 2009 season

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University baseball Head Coach Dan Gooley has announced the signing of six players to National Letters of Intent to attend Quinnipiac next fall. Connecticut natives George Dummar, III (Branford, Conn.), Spencer Kane (Wolcott, Conn.), Kevin Castodio (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Alex Russow (Milford, Conn.) in addition to Derek Lamacchia (White Stone, N.Y.) and Tom Donovan (Marshfield, Mass.) will suit up for the Bobcats next season.

“We are very excited to have all six of these young men joining the Quinnipiac family,” Gooley said. “All of them have had great scholastic success, both on the field and in the classroom. We look forward to their contributions here at Quinnipiac.”

Dummar, a senior at Branford High School, posted a 5-2 record last season with a 1.34 earned-run average over 38 innings pitched. The 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher struck out 56 batters while walking just 19 in that span. As a sophomore, Dummar posted a 4-1 mark with a 2.60 ERA for Branford. Dummar was an All-Oronoque League First Team selection, while also being named to the New Haven Register All-Area and Hartford Courant All-State Second Teams. Dummar was a Connecticut Academic Performance Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society.

Kane is a right-handed pitcher who comes to Quinnipiac from Wolcott High School where he posted a 5-2 record with a 2.22 ERA. Kane struck out 84 batters in 63 innings pitched while walking just 12. An All-Naugatuck Valley League First Team selection, Kane was also voted Wolcott’s Most Valuable Player as a junior. He was also named to the Waterbury Republican-American All-Academic Team and was a member of the Wolcott High School Honor Society and a CAPT Scholar.

Castadio is a 6-foot-2, 210 lbs. right-handed pitcher who earned All-Eastern Connecticut Conference First Team honors after posting a 1.70 ERA while striking out 81 over 53 innings pitched last season. Castadio was also named to the Norwich Bulletin All-Area First Team and the Hartford Courant All-State Second Team as well as the Connecticut Coaches Association All-State First team.

Russow was an All-Colonial League First Team selection at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Conn. The 6-foot-4, 220 lbs. Russow led the team with an 8-3 record while also posting a 2.20 ERA. Russow struck out 82 batters over 55 innings pitched, while walking just 10 batters over the span.

Lamacchia comes to Quinnipiac from Holy Cross High School in Flushing, N.Y. A three-time Holy Cross High School Scholar Athlete of the Year, Lamacchia was also selected to the National Honor Society. At 6-foot-2, 190 lbs., Lamacchia posted a 12-1 record for the Long Island Titans, his AAU team this past summer. Lamacchia fanned 115 batters over 105 innings pitched while walking just 21 batters over the stretch. Lamacchia also posted a 1.56 earned-run average.

Donovan is a left-handed hitting can play any infield and outfield position, in addition to setting up behind the plate. As a junior, the 6-foot-2 utility player batted .358 (24-67) in 21 games played, while also chipping in with three homeruns and six doubles for Marshfield High School. Donovan was named a captain for his upcoming senior season after earning All-Atlantic Coast League First Team honors last year. Donovan was named the Rockland Invitational Baseball Tournament Most Valuable Player.
