The Northeastern baseball team has released its 2009 schedule, and the Huskies will play a 53-game slate, 24 in the Colonial Athletic Association as they aim to return to the CAA Tournament.

The Huskies will open the season on Feb. 25 in Sarasota, Fla., against Eckerd College. Three days later, NU will play its annual exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox at the City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla.

Northeastern will then play nine games in Winter Haven, Fla., at the RUSSMATT Central Florida Invitational from March 1-7. The Huskies will battle Northwestern, Duquesne, Fairfield, Central Michigan, Miami of Ohio and Ohio State.

The following weekend, March 13-15, the Huskies will take part in the Strike Out Cancer Tournament at Seton Hall, playing the Pirates as well as Iona and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Northeastern will then open conference play at James Madison March 20-22. In a new CAA scheduling format, the Huskies will play a 24-game conference schedule with a three-game series against eight teams. NU will host William & Mary, Georgia State, VCU and Delaware while traveling to JMU, Hofstra, George Mason and Towson. The Huskies will not play UNC Wilmington or Old Dominion in 2009.

The Huskies will play in the 20th annual Beanpot Tournament against Harvard on April 7 in Brockton, Mass. The consolation and championship round will take place at Fenway Park on April 13.

Northeastern, under 24th-year head coach Neil McPhee, returns 20 lettermen from last season’s team that finished 25-26-1, 12-17-1 in the CAA, including first-team All-CAA selection Mike Tamsin. Senior catcher Frank Pesanello and senior pitcher Jeff Thomson will captain the team in 2009.
