WILMINGTON, N.C. – Fairmont High School senior Michael Bass, who recently signed to play baseball at UNC Wilmington, will be honored this weekend as one of six finalists for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award at the Downtown Athletic Club in Manhattan.
The winners will be announced on Dec. 13, in conjunction with the Heisman Award ceremony at 8 p.m. on ESPN. The complete Wendy’s High School Heisman Award show, with segments on all finalists, will be broadcast on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
An infielder, Bass earned 2A All-State honors as a junior at Fairmont, and was named Southeastern Conference Player-of-the-Year after hitting .402, with 35 runs scored for the Golden Tornadoes, who reached the state playoffs for the first time since 1993. He competed in the North Carolina State Games, hitting .555 with a pair of doubles and three stolen bases for the Region 4 team.
Bass is ranked 33rd overall in the state by Impact baseball, while Perfect Game Crosschecker has him ranked 1198th nationally.
In the classroom, Bass has excelled, too. He is ranked first in his class and has been honored twice as a Robeson County Student-of-Excellence. He is serving as president of the Future Business Leaders of America and the Academic Honor Society this year.
Bass has also participated in Relay for Life activities all three years at Fairmont and is active in the Boy Scouts of America.
